Idelson and Peter Espenschied advised that the Tregaron Limited Partners are negotiating with potential buyers for the two lots on Macomb Street, and the Tregaron Conservancy has been granted tax exempt status. CPCA members are encouraged to participate in the April 21Tregaron clean-up day. Idelson noted that main agenda for the meeting, which was attended by 44 people, would be a forum for the candidates running in the May 1 special election for the District 2 seat (Wards 3 and 4) on the DC Board of Education (BOE). Five of the seven candidates were present (Sekou Biddle, Joe Carrillo, Martin Levine, Mai Abdul Rahman, and Herb Scott). Each candidate made brief introductory remarks. Idelson introduced the respondents: Mary Levy, Director of the Public Education Reform Project, Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs; and Laura Broach, John Eaton parent and member of the Local School Restructuring Committee. Levy noted that, given the DC Council’s April 3, 2007 First Reading action to transfer authority for the DC schools to the Mayor, the BOE will in all likelihood be an advisory body charged with setting academic, graduation, teacher and related standards, while the Mayor and the Council will oversee the budget and operation of the school system. The BOE will be fully elected by 2009 as scheduled luknder current law. Broach stressed that parents are the key to the schools’ success, noting that they monitor everything from facilities problems to faculty gaps. Levy and Broach then posed hypothetical questions to the candidates, asking how they would handle budget cuts requested by the mayor and new graduation and teaching standards that result in stalemates with parents, and how well the candidates understand and plan to seek input on local needs. The candidates agreed on the importance of parent and local input, the need for flexibility, and the importance of consensus-building with the Mayor’s Office and the other components of the school structure. The candidates then answered questions from the audience. These included inquiries about:: how the BOE will function under the proposed new system and what the BOE can do to have a positive impact: the future of special education services: how to insure public involvement; what happens to closed school facilities; the candidates’ philosophies on education; and, finally, why the candidates are interested in running for the BOE, now that the job has changed. The candidates made closing statements, each stressing their belief that they can have an impact on strengthening the educational system Idelson adjourned the meeting at 8:45 pm. Respectfully submitted, Joan Buchanan, Recording Secretary.
